SERVICE WITHOUT DOWNTIME?
"A machine that stands still generates emotions." As a service manager, you know this better than anyone. This statement by Uwe Galm - Director of Customer Services at Gerhard Schubert GmbH - is more than just a statement.
It is a mirror of reality in mechanical engineering. Because when a production line stands still, it is about far more than just technology. It is about trust, reliability, and the question: Can I rely on my machine builder?
WHY DOWNTIME MUST NOT BE AN OPTION - PROACTIVE SERVICE STARTS NOW
Downtime Means More Than Just Production Loss
When a machine stands still, not only direct costs from production loss arise. Indirect costs also emerge: delivery deadlines cannot be met, customers are dissatisfied, and the machine builder's reputation suffers.
The consequences are serious: loss of trust, reputational damage, and in the worst case the loss of the customer. That is why proactive service is no longer an option - it is a necessity.
“A machine that stands still generates emotions. These emotions are usually negative - frustration for the customer, stress for the service technician, pressure for the machine builder.”
- Uwe Galm, Director of Customer Services, Gerhard Schubert GmbH
Proactive Service as the Solution
The solution lies in proactive service. Instead of waiting for a machine to fail, machine builders must act proactively: plan maintenance before failures occur, have spare parts ready before they are needed, and offer services that create real value.
Proactive service means:
- **Capture and analyze machine data in real time** - sensors continuously deliver data on machine condition
- **Detect anomalies before they lead to failures** - AI models identify patterns and warn early
- **Plan maintenance proactively, not carry it out reactively** - maintenance is planned when it is truly necessary
- **Order spare parts proactively, not procure them in an emergency** - spare parts are there before they are needed
- **Inform customers before problems arise** - transparency creates trust
The Role of Digitalization
Proactive service only works on the basis of data. Machine data must be captured, analyzed, and translated into actions. This requires a digital infrastructure: sensors on the machines, a platform for data collection, AI models for analysis, and a service management system for implementation.
At the same time, processes must be rethought: How is maintenance planned? How are service technicians scheduled? How are customers informed? All of this must be digitalized and automated.
Digitalization is the enabler for proactive service. Without data, no proactive action.
Challenges Along the Way
The path to proactive service is not trivial. It requires investments in technology, changes in processes, and a rethinking in the organization. Service technicians must become data analysts, sales staff must become service consultants, and management must understand service as a strategic business field.
At the same time, customers must be convinced: Why should they pay for proactive service? What is the added value? How is success measured?
Conclusion: Downtime Is Not an Option
Downtime is not an option - neither for machines nor for machine builders. Those who still work reactively today will be overtaken by the competition tomorrow. Proactive service is the future - and this future starts now.
Machine builders who offer proactive service create real value for their customers and differentiate themselves from the competition. The future belongs to those who act proactively.
